Chrysalis by Sophie Dobby

Chrysalis
It took too long
for me to decide
to turn a blind eye
from judging gazes
and sharp tongues like blades.
I rolled myself inside soft armour
and lay in my cocoon
rethinking my humanity
and how I perceive my ego.
My psyche is lost amongst
faded copies of a master page.
I lie within the comforting fluid
like the liquid of the womb
wrapped in the warm silk membrane.
Until I chew my way out the fragile sack
with unfinished wings
to fly away from what I know.
My long tendrils seeking sweetness
in the blinding light.
I feel as though I have inched
from my skin, and found a new one underneath.
Slipped on a silk glove for the first time,
unsure and uncomfortable of this new body
of mine.
